Enjoying Fresh Oysters at Oyster Farm in Tomales Bay, Marin Co., CA

My family went to Tomales Bay vicinity in Marin County, CA for on-site oysters eating experience in the summer of 2011.  It was the second time around for me and my son but it was the first experience for my husband.  My son enjoys the on-site oysters eating experience, he was looking forward to going back again.  I think it might be our annual outing for oysters from now on.

I believe there are a few places along Highway 1 that offer the same service - you can buy oysters, clams, or mussels from them, and they provide picnic areas around the shop for customers to cook/grill and eat.  We went to a place called, Tomales Bay Osyter Company.  We also brought some other food to eat, aside from oysters and clams that we bought there.  Some people brought food and drinks for BBQ, others brought some bread and cheese to go with the oysters, and so on - whatever your heart desires.

Since it is outdoor, it is best to go there during warm weather.  Summer seems to be the perfect time; however, the weather may not be ideal in the summer along the coast in CA - it tends to be windy and a bit on the cool side, especially if there is no sun or on an overcast day, so make sure you have jacket and/or hat handy.  Here are a few tips that could be useful when you go:
  • bring oyster shuck knife (or screw driver, if you know how to use it)
  • a bottle of Tapatio hot sauce to sprinkle on oysters when eating
  • some lemons or limes, also to sprinkle on oysters when eating
  • charcoals, fire starter, etc. for grilling or BBQ
  • bring enough cash, credit card is not accepted, though they have ATM machine
  • bring ice chest with ice if you plan to bring home some oysters, clams or mussels, they sell bag of ice as well
  • bring table cloth if you plan to picnic there in case the table is dirty
  • bring anything else that you would need as if you go picnicking in a park

Have fun and enjoy if you happen to go there ...
